This plaque was found in a church in Kingston-upon-Thames, nearby to the market square.

The plaque reads as follows:
In Memory of
WILLIAM SHRUBSOLE
who died March 19th 1848
Aged 73 years.
And of ELIZABETH, his wife,
who died Oct 26th 1864
Aged 78 years
"In hope of eternal life"
This tablet is erected
by their surviving children
Sarah Ranyard and Mary Booth.

The family were drapers and bankers. After mergers from 1894 the Shrubsole bank became part of the National Westminster Group.

ca 1723 A drapery business was started in Kingston-upon-Thames by Mr Henry Knight.
ca 1788 A banking side was added to this linen drapers business. It is supposed that the founder
was a Mr Rowlls, and the Bank operated as Rowlls & Co.
ca 1790 Business carried on by Mr Clarkson at the Clattern House, where he lived.
1792 The above business appears to have foundered. This is the accepted date of foundation of
the surviving Bank, with the name Clarkson, Knight & Pratt.
? ? Involvement of William Shrubsole I (1759-1829), first Home Secretary of the London
Missionary Society and Secretary to the Committee of Treasury of the Bank of England;
name changed to Knight, Haydon & Shrubsole.
? Replacement of William Shrubsole I by William Shrubsole II (1776-1848); relationship
between them?
1808 A £1 note of this date still exists, drawn “for Knight Haydon & Shrubsole” by Henry
Knight.
15 May 1809 Marriage of William Shrubsole II to Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Knight.
1816 Death of Mr Haydon. William Shrubsole II the only one of the three partners remaining.
Involvement of Robert F Lambert; name changed to Shrubsole & Lambert.
12 Nov 1817 A £5 note of this date exists, signed “for Shrubsole & Lambert, William Shrubsole”.
1829 Death of William Shrubsole I.
1833-34 William Shrubsole one of 2 bailiffs of Kingston upon Thames.
1837-8 William Shrubsole churchwarden of All Saints.

1852 William III and his younger brother John (1822 or 1823-1874) both Councillors of the
Town Ward, Kingston.
20 Jun 1854 Marriage of Samuel Barker Booth to Mary, youngest daughter of William II.
1854-56 John Shrubsole JP Mayor of Kingston.
1856 Edward Shill Phillips entered employment at the Bank [later to become Manager and a
Proprietor].
1857 Shrubsole's drapery shop moved from No. 9 to No. 7 Market Place.
Early 1860s William III withdraws from Bank & public life, the business passing to John.
26 Oct 1864 Death of Elizabeth Shrubsole (née Knight), widow of William II.
1865-9 Death of Robert F Lambert, after serving as a partner for 55 years. Bank traded as
Shrubsole & Co. John Shrubsole devoted his time mainly to the drapery side of the
business, the management of the Bank being left to Edward Shill Phillips.
1870 Shrubsole & Co became bankers to the Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses of the Royal
Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames.
1873 Messrs Shrubsole sold the drapery side of the business, which at the time held the Royal
Warrant as drapers to Her Majesty; John S. was seriously handicapped by a heart
affliction. An advertisement in the Surrey Comet dated 27th December gave notice of his
withdrawal, and announced that the business was to be continued by Joseph Hide of
Gosport.
1874 Death of John Shrubsole. Business to be continued by Henry Shrubsole (previously a
Parliamentary Agent) of Surbiton Hall and Samuel Barker Booth (solicitor).
1877-80 Henry Shrubsole is Mayor of Kingston.
18 Jan 1880 Henry S. dies; business continued by Booth & Phillips.
19 Oct 1880 Mary Booth (née Shrubsole, wife of Samuel Barker Booth) opens an account.
3 Feb 1881 Samuel Barker Booth dies.
1 May 1882 Drinking fountain erected by public subscription in memory of Henry Shrubsole unveiled
in the centre of the Market Place by HRH the Duke of Cambridge.
1894 Shrubsole & Co amalgamated with Parr's Banking Co. and the Alliance Bank Ltd.
