HENRY SHRUBSOLE
1817-1880

Shrubsole Memorial Fountain,
Market Place, Kingston-upon-Thames.

Henry Shrubsole
Three times Mayor of Kingston

In the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames, at the most southerly part of the market place, outside the Market Hall (a building which could have been the town hall in the past), stands the Shrubsole Memorial.
There is a water fountain in the plinth with a couple of figures on the top.  They are both very weathered, but one is a woman with a water jug on her shoulders, the other is a child.  On the side of the plinth is an outline of a man's face, again very weathered, presumably that of Henry Shrubsole, facing the current Westminster Bank.
The inscription is as follows:

ERECTED BY SUBSCRIPTION IN MEMORY OF
HENRY SHRUBSOLE ESQ., J.P.
THREE TIMES ELECTED MAYOR OF THIS BOROUGH IN
1877, 1878 AND 1879.  WHO DIED SUDDENLY IN HIS THIRD YEAR OF OFFICE WHILST PRESIDING ON AN OCCASION OF PUBLIC CHARITY, 18TH JANUARY 1880.

As at 16 December 1999 it was listed as a grade II building in the Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.  The memorial was designed by
Francis Williamson and erected in 1882

[Francis John Williamson 1838 - 1920:  Born in Hampstead, London.
Spent much of his life at Esher.  He produced a lot of statues of Queen
Victoria.  Most of his work was portrait statues and busts as well
as memorials.]

Henry Shrubsole came from a family of undertakers who developed their business into drapery and banking. After mergers from 1894 the Shrubsole's bank became part of the National Westminster Group.  He was the fifth child of William Shrubsole [1775-1848] -
