Chemist, Archaeologist & Geologist
1827 - 1892
Born in 1827 at Faversham, Kent. Died 1892
He was educated at grammar school and then apprenticed to a London surgeon where he qualified as a pharmacist, and in 1852 he bought a Chemist's business in Chester.
In 1857 he assisted the secretary of the old Chester Natural History Society and became chairman of its geological section.
In 1861 he joined the Chester Archaeological Society and was Hon. Curator of their museum until he resigned in 1891 because of ill health.
He presented many papers to the Chester Archaeological Society and his last two scientific papers were on Roman earthenware pipes found in Chester, and the locality of Great Boughton in Roman times.
He also had a large collection of Roman antiquities.
He was awarded the Kingsley Memorial prize of the Chester Society of Natural Science, Literature and Arts in 1882 for a paper on The Corals of the Mountain Limestone.
